英検2級の合否をわけるポイント

実際の問題や結果などから英検2級にギリギリ落ちる人と合格する人の差について分析した結果をまとめました。

まず、まったく合格最低点を超えることができずに不合格になってしまう人は単純に勉強不足です。

「勉強不足」とは具体的に下記のようなことです。

・単語、熟語、会話表現をほとんど覚えていない
・リスニング、ライティングに手をつけていない
・過去問演習をやっていない
・急いで試験直前に勉強をはじめている

高校生のあいだで、「英検2級は1回目は落ちる」という話がありますが、多くは試験の難易度を軽く見て、直前に勉強を開始しているためです。英検3級や準2級に短期間で受かった人は特に注意です。

英検3級や準2級はライティングに大きく救われるという面があるため、リーディングやリスニングで大きく失点していても何とか受かることができますが、英検2級はそうもいきません。

勉強不足以外の原因でギリギリ不合格になってしまうパターンを回避するために意識すべきポイントをお伝えします。

英検2級の点数構成について

英検2級は下のような点数構成になっています。

2024年度第1回試験からリーディングは38問から31問に減り、ライティングは従来の意見論述問題だけではなく、要約問題も追加されています。

1．大問1で熟語対策まで手がまわっていない

大問1は単語、熟語、文法問題であり、問題数は17問です。
20問のうち最初の10題が単語問題、7題が熟語問題という構成です。

受験勉強でも同じですが、あまりにも単語暗記の重要性が強調されすぎて熟語が軽視されているように思います。
英検2級だと、市販の2級用の単語集を完璧に覚えたとしても上限は10点です。

熟語を覚えていないと大問1で高得点を取ることは不可能ですが、なかなか熟語まで手が回っておらず、20問中13点前後になってしまうというパターンが多いです。

英検2級の大問2以降の長文問題は難易度が回によって上下するため、単純にほとんど暗記だけで得点できる大問1で大きく失点してしまうと不合格になりやすいです。

単語を覚えているのは前提として、熟語までがんばって暗記するようにしましょう。
英検2級に限っていうと3問しか出題されない文法問題に時間を割いてしまうのは、ほとんど時間の無駄といっても過言ではありません。

単語≧熟語という優先順位で覚えていきましょう。
単語>>>熟語でとらえている人が多いという印象です。これでは満足に点数をとることができません。

2．リスニング対策を短期間ですませる

普通に考えてリスニング能力が短期間で向上するはずがないのですが、試験直前に対策をしてしまうパターンが多いと思います。

単語や文法などの基礎力を十分に備えた上で対策を始めれば、短期間でもそれなりに聞き取れるようになると思いますが、多くの人は最低でも2～3ヶ月前からリスニング対策を始めることをオススメします。

目標得点は30問中21問の正解です。
直前になってしまっている人は30問中18～19問の正解を目標にしましょう。
そのかわり失点分をリーディングやライティングで補う必要があります。

また、勉強期間中はできるだけ毎日音声を聴くようにしましょう。

3．ライティング対策をやっていない

英検のどの級でも同じことがいえますが、ライティングの点数が合否を決めるといっても過言ではありません。

リーディング、リスニングが約50%の得点率だったが、ライティングが約90%の得点率であったため合格したというケースが実際にあります。

●要約問題
3段落で構成された文章を読んで、45語～55語の英語で要約する問題です。
英検の公式サイトによると下記の基準を採点するとのことです。
・内容　課題で求められている内容が含まれているかどうか
・構成　英文の構成や流れがわかりやすく論理的であるか
・語彙　課題に相応しい語彙を正しく使えているか
・文法　文構造のバリエーションやそれらを正しく使えているか

○要約文は一般的にＡする人がいますが、他方でＢする人もいるという文から始まり、Ｂすることのメリットとデメリットが2点ずつ挙げられています。
全文をいきなり要約するのではなくて、わかりやすく3段で構成されているので、1段ずつ要約していってください。
全体の要約と捉えると難しく感じますが、1段ずつ簡潔に言い換えていくだけだと捉えると負担が減ると思います。

○要約なので1文を適当に短くしたものを丸写しにするだけだと高得点は狙えません。
意味が通るように言い換えてください。単語、熟語、文法学習をしているときに同意表現を積極的に覚えるようにしましょう。
例えば、do away with, get rid of → removeなどです。

○具体例を盛り込むと語数オーバーになるので繰り返し表現や具体例を並べていくのは避けましょう。

○要約文の段落の最初に「良い点は」「悪い点は」などの表現を入れて、わかりやすい構成にしましょう。
A However, Bという書き方も効果的です。

○意見論述
構成、内容、語彙、文法の観点で採点が行われ、各4点満点中3点をとっているとかなり高得点になります。

構成は自分の意見→理由1→理由2→結論という構成で書けているかが問われます。
内容は自分の意見に対し、適切な理由を述べられているか、うまく例などをあげることができているかが問われます。
語彙はまず、用法を間違えずに単語を使用できているか、もっと言えば英検2級対策で覚えた単語を使うことができているかなどが問われます。
文法はおかしな用法で文法を使用していないかどうかが問われます。

一番減点される原因は聞いていることと違うことを答えている場合です。
例えば、Yesと答えているのに内容はNoのものであるなどです。

聞いていることと違うことを答えていると、ほぼ合格はありません。
語数が足らないことよりも減点されるので、まずは何を問われているのかを正確に理解しましょう。

重視すべき順番は内容>構成>語彙>文法です。
大前提として伝えようとしていることが明確でないといけません。

勉強法としては下記の通りです。

●内容、構成点をあげる
英作文を書いたら、他の誰かに添削してもらう。
誰が見ても意見とその理由がわかるように書く。その場で説明しないとわからないようなことは書かない。

●語彙、文法点をあげる
語彙の記憶レベルは「その単語を見れば意味がわかるレベル」「その単語を知っていて使うことができる」にわかれているが、後者の語彙をできるだけ増やすようにする。前者だけだと大問1には対応できるが、ライティングには対応できない。（余裕があるときだけで良い。基本的には確実に知っている表現で書いていくこと）

文法は参考書や問題集を1からやっていくのは時間がかかってしまうため、例文暗記で対応する。
市販の例文集をひたすら覚えて、いつでもアウトプットできるようにしておくこと。

全体の戦略について

明確にはわかりませんが、リーディング、リスニング、ライティングの得点率を平均して65%以上得点できていれば合格する可能性が高いです。

単語だけでなく熟語対策まで手を回す、リスニングは毎日やる、ライティングは添削してもらいつつ使える表現や文を増やしていくという方法で65%以上得点できるようにしましょう。

過去問演習は必須なので、対策として市販のできるだけ回数が多い過去問集を使用しましょう。
収録されている過去問が終わってしまったら、公式サイトにある直近3回分の過去問に手をつけましょう。

1週間くらい前から対策を始めてしまって、すべてやりきれないという人は単語と熟語暗記、ライティングに時間をかけましょう。
